I met Vivian, 19, down in Mexico while working on one of my documentaries — she exhibited a natural curiosity for my camera equipment and we made these beautiful portraits of the young Mexicana on the beach.

She said she was from Veracruz (a long way from home experiencing life on her own).
I was able to get her some large prints for her family before she left the area.

Really great portrait photographers consistently connect with their subjects and expose their "souls" as many writers have put it.

This series illustrates this photographer-model connection quite well, in my opinion.

She didn't speak five words of English and my Español is almost as poor, yet we made great pictures together in spite of our limited ability to verbally communicate.
