Black's Beach Poster
SAN DIEGO — Black's, a local nickname which has endured unofficially since the early 1900s, remains one of the most beautiful and controversial public beaches in the world.

An adventurous only local, Black's lies at the base of a treacherous, 300-foot high cliff in near isolation from the general public.

Nevertheless, thousands of visitors a week traverse its dangerous cliff trails, perhaps for the sights and sensations of playing on the beach—au naturel.

With an established reputation for nudity, Black's was officially designated a "clothing optional" area in 1974 by the city of San Diego.

Although the city rescinded this special status several years later, officials here continue to tolerate nudity on Black's, it seems, since they have rarely cited a visitor for nudity on the beach since.
